The Microscope Exchange provides basic support to medical students, residents, and other healthcare professionals who are interested in starting small-scale laboratory medicine programs in resource poor regions of the world. Selected applicants are eligible to receive the following:

  1. A refurbished light microscope with 10x, 40x, and 100x objectives
  2. Basic laboratory supplies, when available
  3. A laboratory manual describing protocols for basic microscopy protocols and laboratory tests
  4. Financial support, when available

Selection of Eligible Applicants

  1. Applicant has or is working toward a career in medicine or science (i.e. medical student, resident, physician, doctorate, nurse, technician)
  2. A basic understanding of laboratory medicine, or the commitment of the applicant’s pathology program to provide proper training
  3. Institutional support of both present school/institution and affiliated pathology department
  4. Evidence that the proposed project will improve the health of the chosen resource-limited region
  5. Evidence that the proposed project will complement established medical resources and be sustainable in your absence

Selected projects will be asked to provide The Microscope Exchange with a report on their trip, photos and/or video footage of the lab, and a one-year update on the lab’s sustainability and progress.
